Reality Check – Stepping Out Of The Golden Cage

How are you, gorgeous?

I’m sitting here at the Airport of Nice in South France — looking bored on the outside but thinking HEAVILY on the inside — pouring my golden heart out to you. So let me ask you something…

Are you running your business like a pro but it still feels like a job sometimes?

Do you love your clients dearly but you’re still bending over backwards, trying a bit too hard to please them?

Are you spending all your time in front of your MacBook, still not taking care of your body, your mind and your spirit like you should?

You quit your annoying day job long time ago and now you finally do what you love… KINDA.

Oh boy — and this is the trap.

Sometimes you THINK you’re doing what you love but in reality you’re just doing something you like better than what you did before.

Which IS an improvement and part of your personal growth, so don’t get me wrong. But it can become a trap and a golden cage for us if we’re not 100% aware of it.

What exactly am I talking about?

So many things are changing! We are changing. Our relationships are changing. And OUR BUSINESSES are changing for real.

“Change is uncomfortable” they say.
“Comfortable is where you’re at right now” they say.
I say BEING UNCOMFORTABLE freakin’ shows you that something needs to change. (duh, right?)

So yes, I started to feel a little uncomfortable. I’m working too much. Too hard. Too long. And I still don’t get the results that I actually want.

My business isn’t Marie-Forleo-sized yet.
I don’t wake up to PayPal notifications in my inbox everyday.
And I don’t travel first class in Chanel PJs yet. (I did buy Chanel sunglasses though and oh my goodness they are HOT.)

But this is a freakin’ reality check.

I’m not where I want to be yet. This is only the beginning. Constantly learning, constantly growing and constantly trying to improve.

Am I freaking out about this? Nah.
Am I ready to take this seriously? Fuck yeah!

So what about that golden cage? Are you trapped in your own? Did you build one for yourself and put some shiny diamonds on the lock? If so — that’s okay! I did too and it’s still better than a regular, boring steel cage, right? (I do like my gold!)

But it’s time for us to get the F out of there!

I don’t care how fast others build their business, how high they soar within 3 months, how insanely and intimidatingly huge their email-lists are and how many fucking programs they’ve sold while I was still over here trying to “figure things out”.

I’m tired of looking sideways, losing track of my own road. It’s time to look within, people! Because THAT’S where the real gold is.

Does that sound too “spiritual” for you? Too “woo-woo”? Then you need to hear it even more.

Are you doing what you love? I mean what you really, really, truly madly deeply love? Are you “living your purpose”? (can’t believe I’m using this phrase… I need to go on vacation ;)

Or are you locked up in that shiny, glittery, oh-so-golden cage?

I mean it, I want you to take a moment and answer these questions for yourself:

  • Where are you lacking LOVE in your business and life?
  • Where are you playing small, hiding in your golden cage even though you know you have bigger things to share, a greater impact to make?
  • What areas of your business and life need more HEART in order for you to thrive like a superstar?

Ain’t nothin’ wrong with a little soul striptease from time to time.

And I’d love to listen to yours!

How are you doing? Did you raise your hand to any of this? Don’t just read these questions and file them under “things I may or may not do whenever I have time” — that’s not gonna happen. Do yourself a favor and answer them right now. Give yourself a reality check. You need to become aware first if you want to make shi(f)t happen.

It’s time to wake up!

Share your reality and your answers to the questions in the comments with me! It’s a totally judgement-free zone!

I love you, I believe in you and I want you to be able to shine your light so freakin’ bright that it melts away your golden cage and then you can make blingy rings and fancy bracelets out of all that excess gold. Don’t forget to put your diamond on it ;)

Big hugs,

Hannah! Why are we always experiencing the exact same things at the exact same time? We’re always on the same wave length, I swear! I feel like I’m reading my damn diary… Honestly, this is so true and it’s something that us business owners never discuss. It’s not all fun and games.. Owning your own business and doing all the work in that business IS HARD F-ING WORK. We don’t talk about how much pressure we’ve put on ourselves to make our dreams come true, and how it effects the day-to-day of our lives, including our relationships and our health! And we especially don’t talk about how the work never stops, or how balance seems pretty damn impossible, or how we feel guilty for spending a few hours with family and friends because there’s always more to do in the business!

I think it’s time we break free of these golden cages :)

Anyways, thanks for the post. It’s perfect, as always!

    XOXO miss you girl.

Thank you, Lauren <3 I realized I’m also here to say the things that are hard to talk about sometimes ;) We’re both on our ways, girl, and that’s all part of the process!

      Love you, xxx

Hi Hannah, love this post, you are so right the golden cage is still a prison ! I feel that my challenge is to take risks, appreciate and love what I do love and appreciate but take note of what does not work and take action on it. Do some self love, and ramp up my expectations for myself and my business.
I work too late sometimes and give too much for nothing and that can leave me feeling a bit drained and then wondering where are the clients… is energy, if you give your energy away you may as well throw $100 notes out of the window! It is sending a message that I give it all away so why pay me!
Thank you for this post , its a great reminder! xxx big hugs

Rachel, this is our mutual issue right there and we’ve talked about it before ;) That’s why I always told you to raise your prices! You’re so amazing and worth every penny! I also think you should turn your book (or other knowledge) into a course… but maybe I should send you an email about this in case you don’t read my response here :P

      Much love!!!

Hallelujaaaaa!!! You know the only people who get it are my kids. They slam the door to my golden cage right open (still working on proper gold, though). They don’t care for cages. They care for LIFE. THE MOMENT. LIVING. BREATHING. And smarties. They are the most brutal realty checks you can get. But the most effective. I know there is still LOADS of time for you to be a mama, but hey, I’m thinking every successfull business woman should get some kids to make her shine brightly from the inside out!!! Haha, just thinking… ;)

    • Hannah October 16, 2014, 9:05 am

Haha Nina! It’s so funny that you mention your kids in this context. Kids really DO get a lot of stuff that we forget about ;) You know I’ll come to you as soon as the time is right for me to have kids :D

Big hugs and I hope to see you soon!

It’s funny, I just wondered the other day “how is Hannah doing” and then BAAM, I get your email :)

I guess the reality check reveals that I’m chasing the little to-dos instead of actually doing the big tasks that will bring most money.

Thank you for your post! xx
